Samuel AU was born and educated in Hong Kong. His enthusiasm for classical music started when he first learned to play piano and won local Sonata competitions. Fascinated by the sound of violin, he developed it as his major interest with tuition under Li Wing Shun and famous violinist Yao Jue respectively. In his teens, he was admitted into Junior Academy at the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts, performing in Hong Kong, Macau and Shanghai and appeared in program in RTHK and TVB. Samuel succeeded in many competitions including the Concerto Prize and the SeaSound String Competition and also gained Fellowship in Violin Performance from Trinity College London and the Licentiate (Violin Music Performance) from Royal Schools of Music. He also participated in music festivals in St. Petersburg and Prague.
In Europe, he acquired first class honor in Bachelor Degree with Nathaniel Vallois and further studied at Royal Academy of Music, London, under renowned violinist Maurice Hasson. He performed extensively in-house and outside the college and was selected to play in masterclasses with Tasmin Little, Thomas Brandis, Anthony Marwood, Remus Azoitei, James Ehnes, Ingolf Turban, Mikhail Kopelman and Maxim Vengerov, He accomplished Masters in violin Performance with Academy’s highest performing award, the Dip. RAM. In Vienna, he achieved post-graduate diploma in Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien with Anton Sorokow, Concertmaster of Vienna Symphony Orchestra. He joined many competitions and won prizes from Chandos Young Musician Competition, the Herbert Lumby Prize and Bruckner Prize Competition from the Wiener Symphoniker. He plays the second violin in Futurama Quartet in Vienna. Besides, he is a Hifi Enthusiast and loves collecting classical LPs and CDs.
